Myoglobin in crowded solutions: structure and diffusion

چکیده
We present a neutron scattering study of the structure and diffusion of myoglobin solutions at high concentration. The protein–protein structure factor was determined by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements using mean spherical analysis (MSA), and the intermediate scattering function was measured by neutron spin-scho spectroscopy. We observe the cross-over between self-diffusion at high Q and collective diffusion below the structure factor maximum. The self-diffusion coefficient decreases exponentially with concentration. The collective diffusion coefficient is shown to increase at low Q due to direct interactions. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A Computational Study of Oxygen Transport in the Body of Living Organism (RESEARCH NOTE)
Oxygen is an essential part of the living organism. It is transported from blood to the body tissue by the systematic circulation and large part of it is stored in the blood flowing in capillaries. In this work we discuss a mathematical model for oxygen transport in tissues. The governing equations are established assuming that the blood is flowing along a co-axial cylindrical capillary inside ...

متن کاملFacilitated diffusion and the possible role of myoglobin as a transport mechanism.
This paper deals with the facilitated diffusion of oxygen in systems containing proteins, such as ferrohemoglobin, that combine reversibly with oxygen. The phenomenon is treated in terms of translational diffusion of free and bound oxygen molecules, and of the reaction rate of the oxygen molecules with the oxygen-binding protein. These considerations lead to a differential equation (see Equatio...
متن کاملMesoscopic Modeling of Random Walk and Reactions in Crowded Media
We develop a mesoscopic modeling framework for diffusion in a crowded environment, particularly with applications in the description of living cells. Through homogenization techniques we effectively coarse-grain a detailed microscopic description into a previously developed internal state diffusive framework. In turn, in a certain deterministic limit this framework connects to macroscopic fract...
متن کاملMyoglobin's old and new clothes: from molecular structure to function in living cells.
Myoglobin, a mobile carrier of oxygen, is without a doubt an important player central to the physiological function of heart and skeletal muscle. Recently, researchers have surmounted technical challenges to measure Mb diffusion in the living cell. Their observations have stimulated a discussion about the relative contribution made by Mb-facilitated diffusion to the total oxygen flux. The calcu...
